Vertical Entertainment has just bought the U.S. distribution rights to her first romantic-comedy film.
Vertical is planning an August release at the tail-end of the summer blockbuster season, positioning it to score big at the box office.
It will appear in theaters in the top 20 U.S. markets, according to Variety, which means most people will have the opportunity to see it.
The film co-stars Nat Wolff along with Austin Stowell, Mary-Louise Parker, Elisabeth Shue, Dylan McDermott, Jason Lee, Heather Graham, Cary Elwes, Gary Busey and Patrick Warburton.
Selena’s character Nina Pennington is facing troubles with Kevin, (Stowell) her overbearing boyfriend.
Her pal 16-year-old pal Rick Stevens (Wolff) will do anything to be with her including betting a mobster’s son he can win her over. They end up taking a mega rock-and-roll road trip, hoping to work things out.
If the plot sounds vaguely familiar, that’s because it parallels to some degree Jen’s 2012 rom-com “Wanderlust,” with Paul Rudd.
They play a slightly older couple who flee New York City looking for a simpler life and land in a bugged-out commune in Georgia.
The same year Jen’s hit television show “Friends” ended, in 2004, she starred in her first rom-com “Along Came Polly,” with Ben Stiller.
The 45-year-old actress appeared in two dramas before scoring a breakout in her 2006 rom-com “The Breakup,” with Vince Vaughn.
It grossed $203 million worldwide with the lion’s share, $118 million, coming from the U.S., cementing her star status. She’s appeared in 12 comedy films since then, with two more on tap for 2015.
Selena’s Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place,” ended in 2012.
Since then, she’s starred in risque coming-of-age drama “Spring-Breakers” with Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson, and last year’s action-thriller “Getaway,” with Ethan Hawke.
“Behaving Badly,” also previously known as “Parental Guidance Suggested” and “Feed the Dog” is her first romantic-comedy–and could be the first of many more to come.
She may finally have found her niche.
