Julianne Hough has a lot of explaining to do. In a new interview, she tells why she jumped from dancer to judge on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” and also explains how she ended up donning black face and the ensuing uproar over Halloween two years ago.

Hough, 26, a two-time champion on the show, is back for Season 20, but this time she’ll judge instead of being judged. The move suited her, she says.

“The fact that I can go back and judge and still pursue other avenues—it’s a win-win for me,” she tells the magazine. Hough also says she likes to be more like a coach than a contestant and aspires to be a motivational speaker.

She’s a fan of self-help guru Tony Robbins and has attended his “Date with Destiny” seminar twice and took friends, “My mind was just blown. The awareness, the clarity. I always say to people, ‘I just Tony Robbins–ed your ass.'”

If she has clarity now, she was sorely lacking it in 2013 when she decided over Halloween to blacken her face and dress up as inmate “Crazy Eyes” (Uzo Aduba) from the hit Netflix show “Orange is the New Black.”

Hough was photographed dressed up on he way to a Halloween party and the next day social media was on fire over her choice of costumes and its racist implications.

She apologized profusely at the time and still is remorseful about the incident.

“Ignorance is sometimes not bliss,” she says “I really had no idea what I was doing, and it was all out of fun and respect for the character.

“I don’t even know how to talk about it because it’s such a sensitive topic. It makes me so sad to think that I was that dumb. I learned a big lesson,” she says.

Hough and boyfriend Ryan Seacrest ended a three-year relationship in March the same year. She’s currently dating Washington Capitals hockey player Brooks Laich, although she bumps into Seacrest often, she reveals.

“It’s hard not to—he’s everywhere.”

In fact, the end of her relationship led her to chop off her hair into a sexy pixie cut. She initially trimmed it for her 2013 movie “Safe Haven.”

“It was about changing it up and beginning fresh—in the movie but in real life, also.”

For her stunning photo spread, she poses for photographer Carter Smith wearing Bottega Veneta, Vionnet, Michael Kors and Valentino.
