Pattinson is slated to play an astronaut. His mission takes him far beyond the solar system in the far distant future, according to a variety of reports.
That’s about all that’s known so far about the plot. But judging by Denis’ previous work, the movie is sure to have a strong socio-political message. (Ah, the French)
The 69-year-old director’s previous work also provides other hints about possible themes.
Her films have focused mostly on colonial and post-colonial West Africa. She was born Paris and raised in Burkina Faso, Somalia, Senegal and Cameroon, all part of France’s former colonial empire.
Her first picture, 1988’s “Chocolat,” was based on her own experience with African colonialism. It won critical acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, according to her bio.
Her cinematic style involves intense, intimate character studies. So it’s a pretty sure bet Rob will undergo some seriously close scrutiny.
It’s no surprise Pattinson signed onto the film. He’s often talk about working with top directors as one of his career goals, and Denis certainly qualifies.
Since 2002, she has been a Professor of Film at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.
She’s known in academic circles as a “self-declared formalist and brilliant film stylist,” according to Tim Palmer, who’s written a book on French cinema.
Astrophysicist Aurélien Barrau, an expert in black holes and the universe, is reportedly advising her, another hint about the script.
The film will also mark Denis’s first English language picture. Writers Zadie Smith and husband Nick Laird have ginned up the script; Denis is listed as a co-writer.
The film is expected to be ready sometime in 2016.
Robert Pattinson has been hard at work. He’s latest project, “Life,” a character study of ’50s actor James Dean and Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock hits theaters Sept. 25.
He’s also currently shooting the James Gray-directed film “The Lost City Of Z.” It’s about early 20th century British explorer Percy Fawcett. He set off to find a fabled lost civilization in the Amazon and was never heard from again.
