“If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones,” Gaga, 24, real name Stefani Germanotti told Ellen DeGeneres on her show Monday (Sept. 13).
Exactly what rights are at issue isn’t clear, but it has something to do about not being a piece of meat.
“And, I am not a piece of meat,” Gaga declared. Then why wear a dress made of slaughtered and eviscerated cows?
Gaga had to know she was walking into a firestorm of criticism. Only days ago, a photo of her wearing a raw meat bikini appeared on the cover Vogue Hommes Japan’s September issue.
The photo outraged animal rights groups and drew particular scorn from PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a major advocacy group.
“Lady Gaga’s job is to do outlandish things, and this certainly qualifies as outlandish because meat is something you want to avoid putting on or in your body,” said PETA President Ingrid Newkirk.
“No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal,” she added.
Gaga proclaimed herself “the most judgment free human being on the earth” and said she doesn’t have anything against vegetarianism.
But vegans everywhere felt wounded, especially after Angelina Jolie said she had sworn off vegetarianism and started eating meat again because she felt malnourished on a vegetable only diet.
