Vice President-elect Mike Pence got a lesson–a real lesson–in democracy last night from the cast of the hit musical Hamilton on Broadway and President-elect Donald Trump quickly escalated the matter with demands for an apology.

Pence and his family showed up in a motorcade to boos at the Richard Rodgers Theater on Broadway and took a seat inside to watch the popular show.

Trump reacted to the scene with a vitriolic response on Twitter.

‘Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!” he wrote.

“The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!” he added.

The show went on as usual, but during the curtain call, actor Brandon Dixon, who plays another vice president, Aaron Burr, thanking Pence for coming to the show. He then urged the audience not to boo.

Pence was heading for the exit with daughter Charlotte as well as his nieces and nephews, according to ABC News, when Dixon began his address.

As the cast looked on, Dixon delivered a message about diversity.

‘We sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights. But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our Americans values and to work on behalf of all of us. All of us. ‘We truly thank you for sharing this show, this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men and women of different colors, creeds, and orientations.”

Dixon responded to Trump on Twitter. “Conversation is not harassment sir,” he wrote. “And I appreciate Mike Pence for stopping to listen.”

Show creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, director Tommy Kail, producer Jeffrey Seller and the cast penned the statement.

Although Hamilton isn’t a show that usually draws audience participation, last night’s theatergoers repeatedly interrupted songs with boos. At one point, the booing was so loud, actors stopped singing for more than a minute.

Outside, the reception was no less hostile; hundreds of demonstrators shouted “F*ck Mike Pence.”

The reaction was likely due, in part, to his election and his long track record of anti-gay efforts.

As governor of Indiana, Pence support legislation known as the “Religious Freedom Restoration Act.” It allowed businesses to discriminate against same-sex couples based on “religious beliefs.”

In the fact of widespread protests, boycotts and a court ruling declaring such laws unconstitutional, Pence signed an amendment prohibiting discrimination against the LGBT community.

Pence also is a staunch anti-abortion advocate, opposed allowing gays to serve openly in the military, and expressed support for “conversion therapy,” based on the belief that homosexuality is a life choice.

“Democracy” doesn’t mean what you think it does, improper.

Well, maybe this site and Mr Dixon need to be schooled. America is NOT and NEVER was a democracy. America is a REPUBLIC – RULE OF LAW. Democracy is mob rule. Looks like you got some research and reading comprehension to do.
