Long-Time Smoker Jennifer Aniston Confronts Cancer

Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore and singer Alicia Keys will contribute their directing efforts to Lifetime’s “Project Five,” a five-part anthology series, which will chronicle the impact of cancer on people’s lives.

While Aniston and Moore’s contributions to the breast cancer awareness project are admirable, critics point out that smoking is a risk factor for many cancers, and both Jennifer and Demi are longtime smokers.

Of the more than 215,000 cases of lung cancer diagnosed in the U.S. each year, more than 100,300 (47%) involve women.

More than 71,000 women die from lung cancer each year, exceeding the number who die from breast, ovarian and uterine cancers combined, according to the American Cancer Society.

Jersey Shore star Jenni JWoww Farley came under a similar attack when she recently spoke out on breast cancer awareness.

“It’s insulting to me to hear that because I smoke or I had a breast augmentation that I shouldn’t be here,” JWoww said.

Smoking is so prevalent among actresses and fashion models for its reported effectiveness as an appetite suppressant that Ginnifer Goodwin refers to it as the “Cocaine and Cigarettes Diet.”

Chain-smoking notwithstanding, Aniston and Moore both are fitness fanatics who follow healthy diets and work out religiously.

“Our hope with Project Five is to entertain, inform and inspire dialogue, research and prevention,” Aniston, 42, said in a statement.

Lifetime says Project Five will “use humor and drama to focus on the effect that breast cancer and its diagnosis have on relationships and the way women perceive themselves, while searching for strength, comfort, medical breakthroughs and, ultimately, a cure.”

Patty Jenkins, who directed the award-winning drama “Monster,” for which Charlize Theron won an Oscar, will also direct one short story.

A fifth director will be involved, but has not yet been announced.

No airdate for Project Five has yet been announced.

No idea about Moore, but Aniston has given up her smoking habit, only partaking in the occasional cigarette at night. She certainly used to smoke heavily, but that is apparently not the case anymore.
