Penélope Cruz, is one of the belles of the Cannes Film Festival; she promoting a hot new “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie and she recently was honored with the 2,436th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Can it get any better?
Well, she recently gave birth, with new husband, Spanish actor Javier Bardem, to son Leonardo, the couple’s first child.
For the once poor Spanish actress, it all seems like, well, “science fiction,” she tells Vogue magazine in the new June issue.
“I was very lonely,” she says, looking back on those days. “I would find cats in the street and take them with me. I raised a lot of cats in that period.”

During her Walk of Fame ceremony, no less than Pirates co-star Johnny Depp appeared to pay tribute.
They first acted together in the 2001 movie, “Blow,” about real-life cocaine kingpin George Jung.
“She’s the dysfunctional Bacall to my twisted Bogart,” Depp said. “She’s the otherworldly Scarlett to my clueless Rhett. She’s the. . . .” He pauses. “Well, she’s Ricky to my Lucy.”
Cruz, like all mothers, says the birth of her son has had a major impact on her life.
“From the first second, you feel so much love,” she says. “It is a revolutionary experience. That’s the best way I can describe it.
“It transforms you completely, in a second. Nature is very wise and gives you nine months to prepare, but in that moment—when you see that face, you are transformed forever.”
Motherhood, says her mentor, Director Pedro Almodóvar, is “going to be one of her great roles.”
Pirates is also one of her biggest roles.
She plays Blackbeard’s daughter Angelica, who has a love-hate relationship with Depp’s Captain Sparrow. Together, or as competitors, they seek out the Fountain of Youth.
“I was pregnant and a pirate,” Cruz says. “A beautiful experience.”
