Maria Shriver has hired one of Hollywood’s top celebrity divorce lawyers to battle estranged husband Arnold Schwarzenegger, but may have left the door open to reconciliation, despite his humiliating affair with the maid.
Shriver, 55, hired lawyer Laura Wasser, 42, a veteran celebrity divorce lawyer who has represented such luminaries as Angelina Jolie, Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Kiefer Sutherland and Britney Spears.
The scandal blew up after Schwartzenegger, 63, acknowledged in a statement that he’d had an affair with the family’s long-time domestic housekeeper Mildred “Patty” Baena.
Both she and Maria were preganant at about the same time with Schwartzenegger’s children.
But all may not be lost for Arnold.
“Maria hasn’t decided yet if she wants to end her marriage,” a source close to Shriver told People.
Baene worked as a housekeeper for the Schwarzeneggers up until January, but the reasons for her departure are unclear.
She told The Los Angeles Times that she simply retired after 20 years and received severance, but other reports claim Arnold fired her after she threatened to go public with the affair.
The situation prompted the former California governor to issue his own damning statement, admitting the affair.
“After leaving the governor’s office [in January] I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago,” he said in the statement.
“There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.”
Baene’s and Schwarzenegger’s child is now 14-years-old.
Although the affair was consensual, Arnold could be on the hook for millions of dollars in damages for sexual harassment and child support.
