Jay Leno must feel like putting his own comedy writers on trial after he murdered a series of jokes about the Casey Anthony murder trial acquittal, during his monologue last night (July 6) .
The audience reaction proved that the trial’s outcome was no laughing matter.
“It was so hot today, people were as delirious and incoherent as a Florida jury…,” he quipped to a largely silent audience.
“This [verdict] means President Obama’s economic team is only the second most clueless group of people in America,” he tried again, with much the same result.
The silence was so obvious, Leno tried to dig himself out of the faux pas by turning to his band.
“Is the mike off? I don’t think they heard the joke,” he said.
He drew some audience clapping when he tried the joke a second time.
“I don’t get it,” Leno went on — the show must go on!
“Apparently, the OJ jury was tired and they moved to Florida. When they read the verdict, even Casey Anthony went ‘What? What?'”
David Letterman apparently was spared the embarrassment. His show was in reruns while he was on vacation.
The trial of the 25-year-old mother, accused of murdering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee Marie, mesmerized the nation.
But a Florida jury returned a not guilty verdict, sparking outrage across the country.
