Johnny Depp Joins Kristen Stewart Over Rape Remarks

Johnny Depp and Kristen Stewart share a distaste for photographers and a bad habit of relating  photography to rape. Depp is the latest to apologize for his remarks.

Known for his suave demeanor, Depp caused an uproar after excerpts were released from a new interview in Vanity Fair magazine, in which he made the widely criticized comments.

Today, he was back-peddling profusely.

“I am truly sorry for offending anyone in any way. I never meant to,” Depp said in the statement. “It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling.

“I understand there is no comparison and I am very regretful. In an effort to correct my lack of judgment, please accept my heartfelt apology.”

In the interview, Depp had this to say when asked about being photographed: “Well, you just feel like you’re being raped somehow. Raped … It feels like a kind of weird — just weird, man.”

Rape awareness advocates were quick to chastise the actor yesterday (Oct. 4).

The Rape and Incest National Network, a group that helps individuals who have gone through the ordeal, was among organizations irked by the remarks.

“While photos may feel at times intrusive, being photographed in no way compares to rape – a violent crime which affects another American every two minutes,” spokeswoman Katherine Hull said.

Stewart made the same mistake in an interview with the British edition of Elle magazine last year.

“It’s so… The photos are so… I feel like I’m looking at someone being raped. A lot of the time I can’t handle it,” the actress said. “I never expected that this would be my life.”

“Kristen Stewart’s comments are regrettable. Portraying a rape survivor in the film ‘Speak’ should have led her to use a more appropriate metaphor to describe the intrusive nature of the paparazzi,” Hull said at the time.

“Rape is more than an intrusion, it’s a violent crime.”

She also apologized. “I really made an enormous mistake – clearly and obviously,” she later said. “And I’m really sorry about my choice of words.”

I am a rape victim. I do not find this offensive in ANY way. Some rape victim’s may not feel the same way, but I do believe there are many ways someone could feel “raped.”
I feel bad that Johnny Depp and Kristen Stewart have received so much bad press over their choice of words. Rape doesn’t have to be just a sexual violation. It’s a violation and it’s personal. I think anyone who has seen the stars being followed and chased where ever they go should be a lot more sensative about how that may feel. It is a violation of their personal space and moments. Just because they get paid to be actor’s, doesn’t mean that they should have to lose the basic feeling of being safe and secure during their private lives. There is a time and place for photographs to be taken and it shouldn’t be so intrusive.
People, please lighten up! Would it make that big of a difference if they said they feel violated? To me that means the same as feeling raped. Different words but really the same meaning.
From a rape victim, I am not offended and I wish both Johnny Depp and Kristen Stewart peace and happiness! We don’t want to see a Princess Diana repeat!!
