Swimmer Michael Phelps is used to crowds cheering him on, but this week, the Olympic gold medalist rooted for his mom, Debbie, as she walked the runway at the Heart Truth’s Red Dress Collection 2012 Fashion Show in New York Feb. 8.
Debbie, a former middle-school principal, walked the runway on behalf of Heart Health, a campaign to raise awareness of heart disease among women.
“As not only a mother, but also an educator, I have been steadfast in making sure that my children and students understand the importance of leading an active and healthy lifestyle,” said Phelps. “My son has been a part of the Subway restaurant Famous Fan family and the work that they do to promote eating fresh is commendable. I am thrilled to join the roster and help spread the message.”
Organized by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and sponsored by Diet Coke, this year marked the 10th anniversary of the women’s health initiative, which took place the eve of New York Fashion Week.
Other celebrities who participated in Heart Truth’s Red Dress Fashion Show were Minka Kelly, Rose McGowan, Rebecca Romijn, Aisha Tyler, Jennifer Nettles, Elisabeth Rohm, Chaka Khan, Patti Stanger, Gloria Estefan and Christie Brinkley.
During the show, Debbie stopped to give her son Michael a kiss on the runway while wearing a red Adrianna Papell gown. Michael, 26, is currently training for the Summer Olympics in London.
The 2012 London Games kicks off July 27.
