Bobby Brown is widely hated by close members of Whitney Houston’s family, including mother Cissy Houston. And with good reason. Whitney’s marriage to the singer marked the beginning of her downward spiral, and they have never forgiven him.
Although the couple divorced in 2007 after 14 years of marriage, the bitterness still lingers and appears to have intensified since Whitney’s sudden death Saturday (Feb. 11) on the eve of the Grammy Awards Show.
Brown’s recent actions, some suspect, may be motivated by money. In 2008, it was Bobby who was broke. He sued Houston for spousal support and joint custody of their daughter, and for a time was arrears in support for a child from a previous marriage.
Although reports were numerous that Houston was broke and living off advances from her record company, Forbes magazine estimates that Houston’s estate could earn more than $10 million this year. Her death, like Michael Jackson’s, is expected to produce renewed interest in her music and movies.
The estate could continue to generate a multi-million dollar income for years to come. Houston reportedly has a will and has bequeathed most of her estate to her daughter, Bobbi Christina, 18.
According to reports, family members led by Cissy have attempted to prevent Brown from seeing his daughter, who has been devastated by the loss of her mother. Now, several family members also don’t want him to attend the singer’s funeral, according to gossip site TMZ.
People connected to the Houston family have reached out to Bobby to warn him that he shouldn’t attempt to attend the funeral because the family isn’t fond of him, sources close to Brown told the Web site.
In 2008, shortly after their break up, Brown slammed Houston, claiming she got him hooked on cocaine. But reports at the time said Whitney unsuccessfully tried to get Brown to go to rehab before they got married. Instead, she ended up using drugs.
“I never used cocaine until after I met Whitney. Before then, I had experimented with other drugs, but marijuana was my drug of choice,” Brown writes in “Bobby Brown: The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing But,” according to The New York Post.
“At one point in my life, I used drugs uncontrollably. I was using everything I could get my hands on, from cocaine to heroin, weed and cooked cocaine,” he added.
He also accused Houston of marrying him to counter allegations that she was bi-sexual and was having an affair with her assistant, Robyn Crawford. “In Whitney’s situation, the only solution was to get married and have kids. That would kill all speculation, whether it was true or not. In the short, I think I got caught up in the politics and ended up marrying one of the biggest stars in the world.”
But he admitted he was no saint during the marriage. “I am guilty of sleeping with other women… Women are always throwing themselves at you. I’m only human, so I would make the mistake and bite the hook sometimes… I let the testosterone take over.”
The singer is now said to be inconsolable, He reportedly broke down just hours before he was due to perform with his band, New Edition, at a concert in Mississippi. Brown went on with the concert before flying out to Los Angeles to console his daughter.
But Brown was reportedly turned away by Whitney’s family and friends. Bobbi was hospitalized twice after her mother died over concern that she might be suicidal.
Brown’s former attorney, “Real Housewife of Atlanta” star Phaedra Parks is one of his defenders. She insists Bobby isn’t to blame for Whitney’s death. “What we have to remember is that they both were adults and as adults we make choices,” Phaedra told E! News. “They are adults. Whitney took responsibility for what happened with her life.”
But addiction specialists might disagree. Houston undoubtedly had an addictive personality, and as such, could have been prone to drug abuse. But addicts require enablers. As Whitney once said, every time she did drugs, Bobby was right there with her. And there’s no question her life spiraled downward after she met him.
No wonder he’s so hated by the family.
