Andrew Garfield Hit by Spider-Man Fans; New Clip Drops (watch!)

Andrew Garfield came under fire from Spider-Man fans as the new webslinger, but a fresh look at the British actor in his guise as Peter Parker may chill them out until the movie arrives this summer. A new teaser clip shows Garfield in action.

Toby McGuire starred in three Spider-Man movies, with Kirsten Dunst.

The fourth Columbia film, directed by Marc Webb, will be a total departure from the Sam Raimi-directed movies. Those films also starred Willem Defoe and James Franco. All were unqualified hits and set the bar pretty high for the new film.

Emma Stone will play Parker’s love interest Gwen Stacy. The cast also includes Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Parker’s aunt and uncle. In another twist, Stacy is the daughter of the police chief, played by Denis Leary.

The clip unfolds as Parker tries to visit her at her swank Manhattan apartment. He gets antsy when the doorman wants to search his backpack, which might reveal him as Spider-Man. A corner of his suit becomes visible and Parker squirms to conceal it.

The picture goes back to square one and shows wimpy Parker developing his super powers in high school, after being bitten by a radioactive spider. It’s also being shot in 3D.

Judging by a recently released trailer, it will be much darker than the previous efforts and more realistic with less of a comic book feel.

The movie will debut July 3, in what is shaping up to be a summer of blockbusters. “Star Trek 2, “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Avengers” are all slated to debut. In the meantime, check out the new teaser.
