Christopher Dorner felt he had been wronged in 2008 job loss with LAPD.
The body found inside the cabin in Big Bear lake region of California, not far outside of Los Angeles, is all but certain to be Dorner, according to law enforcement officials.
Dorner, 33, had exchanged gunfire with the surrounding deputies. Earlier in the day he shot two San Bernardino County deputies after a violent fire fight; one has died. Dorner’s presumed body was so badly burned it may take days to positively identify him, according to gossip site TMZ.
In the end, Dorner may have set the fire himself after he became convinced he could not escape from the remote cabin. Police said they heard a single gunshot when the cabin started to burn.
The violent rampage began with shootings on Feb. 3rd and Feb. 7th that left three people dead. Dorner made clear in a long, rambling statement on his Facebook page that he was benton conducting “unconventional and asymmetric warfare” on certain LAPD officers and their families.
Dorner fancied himself a rebel and an anti-hero who expressed admiration for others, especially in the entertainment community who have been outspoken on social issues or against authority in general. That include Charlie Sheen, Bill Cosby, Larry David and Ellen DeGeneres.
Dorner was considered especially dangerous because of his police training and his military background. But it appears as though he quickly ran out of options once police launched a regionwide manhunt that made his face one of the most recognizable in six states.
Dorner was fired from the LAPD in 2008, for allegedly falsely accusing a fellow officer of kicking a homeless suspect. The judge who examined the case ruled that there was no way to determine for certain whether or not the incident happened. Dorner was fired anyway.
Dorner’s attorney at the time, Randal Quan called the case “very, very ugly” and said Dorner “wasn’t given a fair shake,” according to published reports.
