Scolds Australia For Banning Film Down Under

James Franco wields a big bat in Hollywood and he’s not afraid to swing it for a little-known gay indie film, “I Want Your Love.” It was banned in Australia because of explicit gay sex, prompting Franco to call the move “silly” and “hypocritical.”

Franco is currently promoting Disney family film “Oz the Great and Powerful.” Disney suits might be a little nervous over this.

“I Want Your Love” is a film about two San Francisco men who spend their last night together before one heads back to the Midwest.

The film is controversial because it features a six-minute gay sex scene, and none of the sex acts are simulated. That was enough last month for Australia’s “Classification Board,” which screens films, to ban it, prompting Franco to post his screed on YouTube today (Mar. 4).

“This is such a disappointment to me and seems really silly”, he said in the video, which is just a shot of him sitting in a room wearing a tie-dyed tee-shirt.

“He was using sex in a very sophisticated way,” Franco added about Director Travis Mathews. “Sex is such a big part of our lives and even if it isn’t a part of your life, it’s a conscious choice to keep it out.”

“To keep from films that want to explore it as human behavior is very short-sighted and, I think, very hypocritical. I don’t think we’d be having this conversation if he made a very violent film,” he added.

The film has found audiences in the United States and Canada at gay-themed festivals such as Frameline36, Outfest, and at Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival, according to deadline.com.

The “Spring Breakers” star also has a personal connection to the film (not in that way). He’s good friends with Mathews.

They collaborated on another gay-oriented film, “Interior. Leather Bar.” It pays homage to 1980 crime/sex drama “Cruising,” starring Al Pacino as a New York detective who hunts for a serial killer who stalks and murders gay men.
