Brittany Murphy Death: Did Diabetes, Thyroid Kill Actress?

brittany-murphyActress Brittany Murphy repeatedly denied ever taking illegal drugs, and may have died from a combination of diabetes and a thyroid condition. She said she couldn’t even take an over-the-counter cold remedy like Sudafed, because it would make her “heart explode.”

Yet rumors persist that drugs caused her shocking cardiac arrest, much like pop icon Michael Jackson, who also died suddenly from cardiac arrest.

Murphy was reportedly taking prescription meds for flu-like symptoms she had been experiencing for several days. Murphy began vomiting early Sunday morning and told family members she was feeling very ill, TMZ.com is reporting

Sources say various prescriptions were found in the home — written for Brittany Murphy, Monjack, and Brittany’s mom. One source told TMZ, “There were a lot … a lot of prescriptions in the house.”

Murphy, 32 who co-starred in the 1995 hit “Clueless” (starring Alicia Silverstone), was found dead Dec. 20 in the shower of the L.A. home she shared with her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack.

Her mother, Sharon, who was close to the petite 5′2″ Brittany, reportedly told paramedics she suffered from diabetes. Some observers have also questioned whether the actress, judging by her looks, also had a thyroid condition.

The thyroid gland can stop secreting essential hormones due to stress or rapid weight loss and can be fatal in left untreated. The condition commonly afflicts women.

Murphy shocked Hollywood a few years ago when she lost a lot of weight, sparking rumors of an eating disorder. But she strenuously denied being anorexic or abusing drugs.

“No, just for the record I have never tried it [cocaine or any other illegal drug] in my entire life,” Murphy tol reporters in 2005. “I’ve never even seen it, and I don’t leave the house too much except to go to work.”

“I am way too high-strung to do drugs. I can’t even take a Sudafed. Can you imagine? My God. I think my heart would explode,” she added, almost presaging her death.

Murphy insisted her strong family ties would make it almost impossible for her to hide a drug habit or an eating disorder.

“If you met [my mom and] the rest of my family, you’d understand that if any of these things were true, I wouldn’t be speaking with you right now,” Brittany said.

She added: “I would’ve had interventions. We’re all very close. If anything is even mildly wrong — from a heartbreak to a life decision — the whole family weighs in on it. So I wouldn’t be allowed, and I wasn’t raised that way.”

Heart attacks are a symptom of long-term diabetes and a leading cause of death among diabetics. In some cases, diabetes can attack the blood vessels, boosting the risk of heart attack, stroke and peripheral artery obstruction, medical experts say.

Hospital staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center tried to revive Brittany three times before pronouncing her dead at 10:04 am PT Sunday, reports Radar. Paramedics had arrived at Murphy’s home at 8:30 a.m.

The L.A. Coroners Office said it will examine Brittany’s Dec. 21, over the objections of her grieving husband.

A toxicology test looking for the presence of alcohol and drugs will also be conducted, but the results wob’t be available for several weeks. Foul play is not suspected.

Michael Jackson also died from cardiac arrest June 25, and it later turned out that he was taking a pharmacopoeia of prescription drugs, including an anesthetic only used in hospital operations. The drug, in combination with others, led to his death.
