You may recall, the series kicked off in 1912 at the height of the Edwardian era, when the British peerage lived in a privileged and highly regimented culture.
If anything, the series has documented how the onslaught of the 20th Century, from world war to flappers, changed the lives of the Crawley family and their servants.
When we last left Lord Grantham, Lady Mary and their off-spring, they were struggling to maintain their lives as landed gentry while coping with widespread social change.
The season will begin in 1925, about six months after the previous season ended.
While the show’s arc is unknown, we know from history that Mary will finally get her wish and be able to inherit the Abby. The Administration of Estates Act of 1925 ends the rule that only males can inherit property.
Otherwise, it wasn’t an eventful year.
The new promo suggests that the family’s way of life will finally succumb to the realities of modernism. Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and his loyal servant Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) share a poignant moment.
“If I could stop history in its tracks, maybe I would. But I can’t, Carson, for neither you nor I can hold back time,” Crawley says.
Judging from the trailer’s scenes, there will be a death in the family and stately Downton Abbey may be forced to close up. Mr. Carson also appears to be taking his leave.
There also appears to be a marriage and a death in the family.
