Ridey has acting in her blood. Her great uncle was actor and playwright Arnold Ridley. He’s best known for “Dad’s Army,” a BBC sitcom about the British Home Guard during World War II.
Ironically, she had only appeared in one other film, “The Inbetweeners 2,” before being cast in “Star Wars.” Her first film was a sequel to a British television comedy by the same name. But all her scenes were cut.
Credit “Star Wars” Director J.J. Abrams for casting her. He wanted a fresh-faced actress for the lead role. She starred with John Boyega and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and cast veterans Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill.
She’s currently filming Star Wars Episode VIII, the sequel to The Force Awakens. It’s proving to be a totally different experience.
“They are two very different things. Episode VII was like the beginning of the whole thing, and it was terrifying and incredibly rewarding, and I felt like I pushed myself beyond boundaries I thought I had. And now [on Episode VIII], I feel more together and I feel more present.”
After getting cast, she had to endure five-hour-a day, fitness and stunt training for three months. She also had to train to learn how to wield a light saber. Then, nine months of filming followed.
It was more than an ordeal for the actress. She reveals that her wrists are so bad, she can’t even do push ups. She also hates running, but always feels good after she does it because it makes her feel like a “bad ass,” she says.
The DVD and Blu-ray will contain the usual special features, deleted scenes and commentary from Director Abrams, who reveals that rebel pilot Poe Dameron was killed in an early script, but was kept in the movie to build a new cast of heroes.
“That was the script that Oscar saw,” Abrams says on the DVD’s behind-the-scenes documentary.
