Emily Blunt had visions of “rainbows and sunbeams” when she became a Hollywood actress, but–surprise!–it’s a hard-edged business. “Any advice I have for anyone going into it is to do something else,” she says in a new interview.

The British actress got her start in theater.

As an 18-year-old, she played the granddaughter of Judi Dench’s character in West End show The Royal Family.

“I think she was quite young and frightened and insecure when we did The Royal Family … You kind of know with somebody’s attitude,” says Dench in Vanity Fair.

“She has a great sense of humor–which is more important than anything–a huge talent, and was ravishingly pretty.

Blunt insists she’s not a cynical person. But she says her illusions about Hollywood have been tempered by experience.

“I am not cynical in my personal life. I actually feel quite hopeful. But with the business itself, you have to approach it in a harder way. I think you have to wear a helmet,” she says.

“You are part of a machine that is moving and will overwhelm you and drown you if you are not tough in it.

“It’s a very precarious industry that can often be quite crushing, so any advice I have for anyone going into it is to do something else.”

Two years after her theater debut, Blunt segued into British television.

Her first appearance was in the 2003 television film “Boudica (Warrior Queen).” She also played queen consort Catherine Howard in the miniseries “Henry VIII.”

In 2006, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the TV film “Gideon’s Daughter.”

She’s appeared in more than 30 movies in all, but has never been nominated for an Academy Award.

In the coming year, she’ll star as Mary Poppins in a sequel to the 1964 film starring Julie Andrews.

She’ll also star in a supernatural thriller “A Quiet Place,” co-starring husband John Krasinski, who also directs.
