Joseph Gordon Levitt and his upcoming science fiction film “Looper” are receiving critical raves after debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival, and two new trailers provide revealing looks at one of the most anticipated films of the year.
Levitt plays Joseph Simmons a hired assassin, also known as a looper. He works for a gang that exists 30 years in the future, when time travel has been invented. But it’s illegal to do and only criminal gangs use it.
It’s all but impossible to kill anyone in the future because everyone is tracked, so gangs send their intended victims back to the past to be killed and disposed of by a waiting looper. But Simmons is thrown for a loop himself, when his future self is sent back to him to be killed.
A moment’s hesitation allows his older self, played by Willis, to escape. A manhunt ensues with Simmons desperate to kill his older self before he’s killed himself for allowing the escape.
The 2:49 trailer, which is now playing on the Looper Web site, details the movie premise and includes some key interaction between Levitt and Willis that make the film one to watch. So far it has a 100 percent rating on rottentomatoes, which so far has tracked 25 reviews from the Toronto Film Festival showing.
“[Rian Johnson's] grandly conceived, impressively mounted third feature shows a giddy, geeky interest in science-fiction, then forces it into the back seat and lets the multidimensional characters drive,” wrote Peter Debruge of Variety.
Johnson hauls us through a cat-and-mouse chase, peppered with great dialogue and two showcase performances from Willis and Gordon-Levitt,” Henry Barnes wrote in the UK’s Guardian.
A second, 48-second trailer showcases Jeff Daniels, who plays the crime syndicate’s boss and the person who made Simmons a looper.
“Looper” hits theaters on Sept. 28. Click below to check out the trailers and click here to follow TheImproper on Twitter for more film updates.
