Tom Hanks Lays Down the 'Rules' in New Bridge of Spies Trailer (see!)

Tom Hanks plays lawyer James Donovan, who is hired by the CIA to negotiate the release of a U.S. spy plane pilot shot down over Russia. In a dramatic moment featured in a new trailer, he makes clear to a smirking CIA agent he’s playing by the rules

The rules, he points out, are better known as the U.S. Constitution. Three cheers for America.

Steven Spielberg directs and co-stars include Mark Rylance, Scott Shepherd, Amy Ryan, Sebastian Koch and Alan Alda.

The tense drama is based on actual events. U-2 spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the old Soviet Union by a surface to air missile in 1960.

It became a major international incident, dramatically increasings Cold War tensions to the brink of war.

Prior to his near impossible mission, Donovan is an insurance lawyer from Brooklyn. He has little experience in complex negotiations, and reluctantly takes the job.

As it turns out, Donovan is a former prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals following World War II. He shows incredible resolve
without compromising his integrity or the values reflected in the historic document that binds us as a nation.

The clips reflect the often delicate and diplomatic nature of behind-the-scenes negotiations juxtaposed against the saber-rattling and table pounding propaganda campaigns by both nations.

Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen and Joel Coen based the script on the Powers incident.

Not since his courtroom drama in the 1993 film “Philadelphia,” has Hanks acted in such a superbly nuanced film role.

“Bridge of Spies” hits theaters Oct. 16.

Cate Blanchett Beds Rooney Mara in Lustful, New 'Carol' Trailer (see!)

Won Raves at Cannes Film Festival in May

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara won raves at the Cannes Film Festival for their new movie “Carol,” and now a new trailer shows why. They plumb the depths of forbidden love in 1950s America in a torrid lesbian love affair.

Mara went on to win the Palme d’Or, the festival’s highest honor for best actress.

The film focuses on the social and moral implications of two women in love during very uptight times. It also plays off class distinctions.

Blanchett, 46, plays Carol Aird, a wealthy, older Manhattan socialite who becomes infatuated with Rooney’s younger character, Therese Belivet. She’s a so-called “shop girl” who would be scorned by Carol’s social circle.

As it turns out, both are married to men. But the attraction between them is irresistible.

The scandalous relationship can only end in tragedy and ruined lives. But this film has a twist. (Sorry, no spoilers!)

It’s based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 semi-autobiographical novel “The Price of Salt.” It also stars Sarah Paulson and Kyle Chandler.

The book was so scandalous for its time, Highsmith published it under a pseudonym. It was later republished under her own name and titled “Carol” some four decades later, in 1990.

Todd Haynes, best known for “Far From Heaven,” I’m Not There” and Mildred Pierce,” directed. The film screened to critical reviews at the 2015 Cannes festival in May.

The latest trailer follows the release of a teaser in August.

This is not only a story about love, but about the complications of love, from Carol’s loveless marriage, to her obligations to her family and children.

Like the initial teaser, this trailer is a mood piece, featuring lush cinematography and very little dialogue.

Carol opens in limited release in November and is sure to whet Oscar appetites.
