Dakota Johnson and Drew Barrymore were enough to pique my interest in their new movie “How to Be Single,” even though I’m pretty jaded about all these young-adult movies. Demographically speaking, they are a bit out of my comfort zone.

Johnny Depp stars as a scientist who goes mad after his mind is merged with an artificial intelligence machine.

Johnny Depp remains one of the most puzzling and intriguing actors on the scene today. His latest film, “Transcendence,” won’t do a thing to change that perception. He delves into the science fiction mystery thriller with typical Depp intensity–profound, curious and 100 percent engaging.

Reflections on Two Summer Blockbusters: Dark Knight, Skyfall

Both Films Are Now on DVD; Spend Your Money One

Daniel Craig in Skyfall (top) and Christian Bale as Batman in Dark Knight Rises.

Daniel Craig in Skyfall (top) and Christian Bale as Batman in Dark Knight Rises.

The latest James Bond film “Skyfall” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” were two of last year’s blockbusters, but I only got around to seeing them recently. I’m glad I waited. It allowed me to put the films in perspective without all the surrounding hype.

Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit Scores' on Superior Direction (video)

Spellbinding Action, Well-Essayed Characters Lift Movie

I never read J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” series, but when the opportunity came to see a screening of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” I jumped at the chance. I was dazzled not so much by the story, but by director Peter Jackson’s epic handling of complex material and myriad characters.

Ben Affleck's 'Argo' a Harrowing Tale Well Told, Well Acted

Iranian Hostage Crisis Provides Backdrop for Thriller

When actor Ben Affleck turned director with his brilliantly staged “The Town” two years back, audiences and Hollywood took note. It was a tense, tautly realized. His latest effort, “Argo,” is much the same.

Clint Eastwood's 'Trouble With Curve' Is No Empty-Chair Speech (video)

Credible Performances by Amy Adams, Justin Timberlake Lift Movie

Clint Eastwood’s antics at the Republican National Convention two weeks back put a rather uncomfortable magnifying glass on all his recent activities. But at 82, he hasn’t lost all his marbles yet, judging by his new movie “Trouble With The Curve.”

Will Ferrell's 'The Campaign' Could Be Summer Sleeper Hit

Rivals Last Year's 'Crazy, Stupid Love" in Laughs, Production

“The Campaign,” starring an outrageously funny Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, rivals last year’s comedy movie of the summer, “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” a sleeper film starring Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Julianne Moore and Emma Stone.

Lasse Hallstrom Scores With Salmon Fishing in Yemen

Blunt, McGregor Resonate in Off-Beat Romantic Comedy

Lasse Hallstrom’s invigoratingly beautiful ode, “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen,” could be the best movie of the year. Hey, I know we’re just three months in, but Ewan McGregor; Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas are stellar.
