Follows in Footsteps of Legendary Hollywood Sirens

scarlettjohansson-maggieScarlett Johansson puts her sizzling sexuality to the test against some of the titans of stage and film in her debut as Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Would you believe Elizabeth Taylor, Jessica Lange, Kathleen Turner, Ashley Judd and Anika Noni Rose?

All of those sirens have preceded her either on stage on in the case of Taylor in the heated 1958 film drama with Paul Newman and Burl Ives.

Taylor received a best actress Oscar nomination for the role of sexpot Maggie the Cat and set the bar for burning sexuality for actresses that followed her. The Tennessee Williams play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955, with Barbara Bel Geddes in the role.

Johansson seemed to have all of the requisite skills as she stripped to her negligee in front of an audience for the first time Thursday night in her official debut. The show also stars Benjamin Walker, Ciarán Hinds and Debra Monk.

The 28-year-old actress knows where way around a Broadway stage even if she’s only wearing a silk lace nightgown. She won a Tony Award for featured actress in the 2010 play A View from the Bridge.

Since her divorce from Ryan Reynolds, Johansson has bounced around in relationships with French journalist Romain Dauric, fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff, Jared Leto, Sean Penn and advertising executive Nate Naylor.

On the big screen, she plays Janet Leigh in “Hitchcock,” about Alfred Hitchcock’s travails making the groundbreaking horror film “Psycho.”

“I’m finally at a place in my life where I feel comfortable not anticipating the result. I’m comfortable with being uncomfortable,” she told The New York Times in a recent interview.

The show officially opens at the Richard Rodgers Theatre Jan. 17.
