Amy Poehler Joins the Navy, That Is, ‘Old Navy’ Clothing Brand

Amy Poehler will be writing, directing and starring in commercials for Old Navy clothing.

Amy Poehler, who cut her comedic teeth on “Saturday Night Live” and now stars on sitcom “Parks and Recreation,” is joining the Navy. Well, not the seagoing Navy, but Old Navy, the preppy clothing brand.

The campaign, which she stars in and also helped write and direct, will air its first ad tonight during “American Idol,” on Fox.

You can bet most spots will be laced with humor.

In the ad, Poehler plays a law firm executive who is interviewing a job candidate. But her attention quickly drifts to the Old Navy clothes the candidate is wearing, according to Ad Age.

Poehler follows another comedian, Melissa McCarthy, who appeared in ads during the kick-off of the Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday shopping season, known as “Black Friday.”

Old Navy Global Chief Merchandising Officer, Ivan Wicksteed, told Ad Age the ad featuring McCarthy was responsible for “hugely successful” Black Friday sales.

Many actors are skittish about endorsing products in television commercials, fearing it will hurt their credibility. Some only appear in ads that air outside the United States. But it’s becoming more widely accepted in Hollywood.

Poehler also appeared in a 2013 Super Bowl commercial for Best Buy and has done other product endorsements. Her ads will also run during “Parks and Recreation,” and repeats of “Saturday Night Live” featuring her work.
