Demi Lovato, who has become a leading anti-bulimia advocate, was as quick to jump to conclusions as nearly every other critic and media outlet.
“As if we didn’t have enough people glamorizing eat disorders already. :-( Bottom line, it’s not ‘cool’ or ‘artsy’ at all.” Lovato wrote on Twitter, branding Gaga’s stunt “sad.”
But the practice is will known in BDSM circles and even has an official name “Emetophilia.” It’s broadly defined as a “paraphilia,” that is, something that provokes intense aberrant sexual arousal.
Related behaviors include pedophilia, zoophilia, sexual sadism and exhibitionism.
Individuals who engage in Emetophilia are sexually aroused by vomiting or by watching others vomit, according to medical references.
It’s also known as a “Vomit Fetish,” or a “Roman Shower,” after a practice that was thought (mistakenly) to have occurred during Roman Bacchanalia. Romans allegedly binged and purged so they could continue wild sex orgies.
Emetophilia can also be an element of a dominant-submissive relationship.
Gaga was performing her song “Swine,” when Millie Brown a performance artist who paints by vomiting colors, walked on stage and drank some green paint.
She thrust her fingers down her throat and induced a gag-reflex that caused her to vomit on the singer.
While Lovato’s feelings are well-intention, they may be misplaced.
