Self-promoting reality stars like Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and Tila Tequila started the trend. But now just about every media celebrity, music artist, Young Hollywood starlet and high-fashion model is in on the trend.
Of course, it took Twitter, Instagram and other social media outlets to give the selfie marketing its legs.
Ironically, the selfie didn’t make Upton famous. She first vaulted into pop culture consciousness through a video of her doing the Dougie during a break in a Los Angeles Clippers game back in 2011.
Kate reprised some sexy dancing in a Vogue video with two of clones in a bit of trick photography.
She was rookie of the year in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue that year and landed on the cover in 2012 and 2013. By then she was on her way.
It wasn’t hard to figure out that for any celebrity to stay in demand, they have to stay in the public eye. What better way than a selfie?
Celebrities can control the content and timing of a photo, without subjecting themselves to the whims of tabloids. Plus, they often reveal their personal sides that fans rarely get to see.
