“Frozen” also scored another first this year. It’s the first Animation Studios film to snag an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
It features the voice talents of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad.
To date, the film has grossed $1.07 billion dollars worldwide, with $398.4 million coming from the domestic box office and $674 million internationally.
The picture exploded out of the gate over the Thanksgiving weekend last year, kicking off the holiday film season, and soared to a No. 1 debut with a $93.6 million five-day box office gross and a $67.4 million three-day gross.
It held a spot among the top 10 domestic films for 16 consecutive weeks, the longest run by any film since 2002, Disney said.
The 3D computer-animated musical fantasy-comedy inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Snow Queen,” continues to set records in digital release.
It’s the fastest-selling digital release ever and sold more than 3.2 million Blu-ray/DVD copies on the first day of its release. If the trend continues it will be one of the biggest home entertainment sellers in a decade. The film was released digitally Feb. 25 and on disc Mar. 18.
What’s more, the “Frozen” soundtrack has gone platinum, signifying more than 1 million sales.
“Frozen” is directed by Chris Buck and writer Jennifer Lee,. It features original songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and an original score by Christophe Beck.
