Boomer Esiason Apologizes for Dan Murphy Paternity Leave Rant

Boomer Esiason was all humble pie this morning as he apologized for his remarks about Mets player Dan Murphy’s decision to take paternity leave and miss opening day.

Boomer Esiason, who made a living throwing bombs as a pro football quarterback, realized he threw another with his rant about paternity leave for major league baseball player Daniel Murphy and apologized today (Apr. 4) for his remarks.

Esiason spoke out on his radio show Wednesday (Apr. 3) about the New York Mets player’s decision to take three days of paternity leave to be with his wife, who was giving birth to their first child.

The move meant he would miss two games including opening day. The decision didn’t go over well with Esiason, or his side-kick Craig Carton.

“Quite frankly I would’ve said ‘C-section before the season starts. I need to be at opening day,” said the ex-quarterback.

Co-host Carton agreed. He said Murphy should have taken off 24 hours at most, not the full three days Major League Baseball grants to players.

Sports commentator Mike Francesa on WFAN radio went even further.

“I don’t know why you need three days off, I’m going to be honest,” he chimed in. “Your wife doesn’t need your help the first couple days, you know that,” he added.

The remarks touched off a firestorm and morning talk shows jumped into the fray as the story went national.

Today, the sports bravado was gone, and Boomer was all humble pie. He opened his show today by saying he was “truly sorry” for what he called the “insensitive comments” he made about Murphy’s leave.

“I can only hope that people understand that my comment — my flippant comment — wasn’t made in any way, shape or form to insult anybody. But obviously it did. And for that I am truly sorry,” he said.
