Amanda Bynes, one of Hollywood’s hottest young actresses until bizarre behavior trashed her career, is at the center of new mental health controversy that may be aimed at getting her back to work.

Bynes, who turned 28 last week (Apr 4), was diagnosed as schizophrenic and bipolar following an involuntary psychiatric commitment last year.

She reportedly is on the mend now thanks to her psychiatric stay and drug regimen, according to gossip site TMZ.

But her mother, Lynn Bynes, now claims she was never sick and definitely not schizophrenic. She blames the evil weed, marijuana, for her troubles and insists Amanda is healthy and off drugs.

But the situation begs a question: Is this just a mother’s love talking, or is the real motive to make it possible for Amanda to work in films, again?

Given her recent history, it would be almost impossible for a production to get insurance that would allow her to act in a film. But if she were “clean and healthy,” with no mental illenss, her odds would be significantly better.

Amanda started acting when she was seven, and scored a steady gig on the Nickelodeon series “All That” in 2002. She segued into her own star vehicle, “The Amanda Show,” which ran on the kid’s network through 2006.

She also began a steady film career that included such movies as “What a Girl Wants” (2003), “She’s the Man” (2006) and two 2007 films “Hairspray” and “Sydney White.”

She was a standout in a key supporting role in the 2010 film “Easy A,” a teen comedy that helped launch Emma Stone’s big-screen career.

While Emma soared afterward, Amanda crashed and burned. She announced in 2012, during one of her spells, that she was quitting acting.

Amanda was released from the hospital last December and placed in her parents’ care. She looked happy and healthy, and her mom now insists, “She has no mental illness whatsoever.”

Doctors and some people close to the actress are reportedly alarmed at the recent turn of events, according to TMZ.

She could suffer a relapse at anytime, if she’s really schizophrenic and not taking her medicine. That would be truly tragic.
