Rush Limbaugh lambasted CBS today for hiring Stephen Colbert to take over for David Letterman.

Stephen Colbert isn’t really a right-wing-bashing liberal in conservative clothing, although he plays one on his Comedy Central television show. Yet right-wing talking head Rush Limbaugh thinks the fat-head skewering character is real. D’oh!

On his radio show today, Limbaugh wailed that CBS’s decision to replace David Letterman, hardly a right wing radical, with Colbert is equivalent to declaring “war on the heartland of America.”

“No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional American values, conservatives, now it’s just wide out in the open,” Limbaugh railed.

“What this hire means is a redefinition of what is funny and a redefinition of what is comedy,” he said.

D’oh!

Although he started out as a serious actor, Colbert has been a sketch comedian since his days with Second City’s touring group. He specializes in creating characters that satirize people and events.

His entre to Comedy Central came when he joined the cast of a 30-minute sketch comedy series “Exit 57” that aired from 1995 to 1996. After the show was cancelled, he joined “The Daily Show,” as a “correspondent.”

He created his character, a seemingly uptight, all-American conservative zealot, who lampoons fellow conservatives for the show and continued it when he got his own show “The Colbert Report” in 2005.

Colbert has said he will no longer do the character once he takes over for Letterman. But that didn’t stop Limbaugh from trying to score points with his misguided rant.
