Ed Sheeran, the fast-rising UK singer and songwriter, put on an impressive display of musicianship on Saturday Night Live, with two of his hits, both of which have one-word titles and shouldn’t be said together.

The songs, “Sing,” and “Don’t,” will appear on his upcoming album “X,” pronounced “multiply.” It will be released in June.

Sheeran is caught at an unusual inflection point in his career, sort of like Bob Dylan when he switched from acoustic to electric guitar.

Ed is mostly noted for his acoustic guitar playing, but as he’s gotten bigger, so has his sound. He’s added full instrumentation to many of his songs.

Sheeran purists might find this objectionable, but he’s destined for stadium concerts and will need the backing sooner or later.
