After Sam got the call–he was the 249th player drafted out of 257–he and his boyfriend embraced and kissed several times on the lips. ESPN never wavered in its coverage, filming the whole scene.
The the reaction poured in, largely over social media, and it wasn’t all roses. Even some NFL players added their two cents.
“OMG” Tweeted Miami Dolphins safety Don Jones. “Horrible,” he added before quickly deleting the messages, according to The Los Angeles Times.
The Dolphins immediately sanctioned Jones with a fine and suspension until he can complete sensitivity training, according to the team. Jones has since apologized.
But he wasn’t the only player.
“I’m sorry but that Michael Sam is no bueno for doing that on national tv,” Tweeted ex NFL running back Derrick Ward.
“I’m fine with it being a new day in age but for him to do that on National tv is disgusting,” he added.
“Gay or not. Man U got little kids lookin at the draft. I can’t believe ESPN even allowed that to happen.”
ESPN producer Seth Markman told The Times the filming is consistent with the network’s coverage of the event. Plenty of players have been shown kissing their girlfriends, he noted.
