Sterling was caught in a firestorm of publicity after an audio tape leaked in which he berated his girlfriend for befriending African Americans, including basketball great Magic Johnson.
He later sat for an exclusive interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN to explain his remarks and swear he isn’t a racist.
But Conan told viewers he thought Sterling “was trying way to hard to show he’s not a racist.”
The talk show host aired a short clip of the Anderson interview showing Sterling wearing a super-imposed Dashiki and other traditional African garb.
Beside poking fun at the clothing and making Sterling look ridiculous, the clip played off racial stereotypes. It also demeaned African Americans who wear traditional garb.
Sterling was also surrounded by photos and pillows imprinted with the likenesses of African-American celebrities Morgan Freeman and Jamie Foxx.
So was the spoof racist? And where do you draw the line?
