The film has been in the can now for quite some time.
It was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, and opened the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, giving a limited number of critics a chance to weigh in on it.
So far so good. The film has a 78 percent rating on review tracking Web site rottentomatoes based on nine reviews.
Trade rag Variety, usually upbeat, calls the picture one of the “most faithful of the many adaptations of the author’s work.”
But even the UK’s Guardian newspaper, which can be tough on films, also gave it a thumb’s up. “This is an unexpectedly winning take from one of the less splashy directors to have attempted Leonard,” wrote critic Catherine Shoard.
In the movie, Jen plays Mickey Dawson, a brow-beaten trophy wife married to Frank Dawson (Tim Robbins). He’s a shady businessman who keeps much of his assets and his mistress (Isla Fisher) parked in the Bahamas.
Some sad sacks hatch a plan to kidnap Mickey and demand a $1 million ransom. Only problem is Frank has just filed for divorce and sees the situation as a chance to unload his wife… permanently.
The film will go into limited release Aug. 29.
