Jennifer Lawrence plays Mystique in the latest X-Men movie, which cleaned up at the box office over the weekend.

Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackman and the rest of the X-Men mutants may have won the boxoffice with a stunning $111 million gross over the three-day holiday weekend, but there is still no joy in Hollywood–overall receipts are down.

The mutant tale, “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” officially kicked off the summer movie season, with the fifth best outing for Memorial Day holiday films.

The picture was up against “Blended” with Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore and Bella Thorne, and frat-boy movie “Neighbors,” with Zac Efron, Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne.

But the weekend box office is down by 26.8 percent compared with last year, according to deadlinehollywood.

Despite a 14-year run, the X-Men series shows no signs of wearing out its welcome. The latest film opened to the second highest debut in the series.

Although “Godzilla” finished out of the money, it’s total gross surpassed $300 million globally after debuting last weekend, making it a major blockbuster.
