Quvenzhané Wallis turns on the charm in a new trailer for the movie version of the hit Broadway musical “Annie.” Her performance should melt the hard hearts of critics who questioned why an African-American child was picked for the lead role.
In fact the two main roles went to minorities. Jamie Foxx plays an updated version of Daddy Warbucks.
He’s a wealthy politician who is running for Mayor of New York City. He bumps into Annie on the street and saves her from being run over by a speeding delivery van.
That creates an unusual partnership that blossoms into a lasting relationship.
Wallis, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” sparkles as Annie. Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale also make appearances in the clip.
The backlash over Annie’s casting began roiling when the first movie trailer was released March 5.
Author Harold Gray created Annie as a comic strip and it debuted in The New York Daily News in 1924. In radio, movie and Broadway adaptations since then, Annie has always been played by a white child.
Rapper Jay-Z and actor Will Smith are producing the latest film version. The film is set in modern day New York City.
It will hit theaters Dec. 19 during the holiday season.
