Bret Michaels’ sudden medical emergency during a New Hampshire concert last week has renewed focus on the dangers of diabetes, which can be life threatening if it gets out of control.

Michaels, 51, suffered an apparent bout of extremely low blood sugar three songs into his show at the Palace Theater in Manchester. He became faint and disoriented.

Poison’s Bret Michaels Back in Hospital With ‘Mini Stroke’

“In the 9 years I’ve stood next to him, I’ve never seen a look like the one on his face as if I was a complete stranger,” said one of his bandmates, guitarist Pete Evick.

Bret was taken to a hospital. Doctors said he was suffering from insulin shock and severe low blood sugar combined with exhaustion, dehydration and a fever related to the flu.
