Aussie teen band 5 Seconds of Summer debuted on the Today Show this morning (July 22), marking their first big exposure in the United States.

Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin, better known as Aussie band “5 Seconds of Summer,” or 5SOS, for short, rocked the “Today Show” this morning (July 22) and appear destined to join One Direction as the latest tween idols.

At least the lads play their own instruments.

Hemmings sings lead vocals and plays guitar, Clifford is also on guitar and vocals, Hood plays bass and sings and Ashton Irwin pounds the drums and sings as well.

Oddly, One Direction, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, gave 5SOS a big boost when it tapped them for their opening act on the singing group’s “Take Me Home” tour in 2013.

Before the One Direction tour, the Aussie band was better known for their YouTube videos. They started posting covers in 2011, shortly after they joined up.

They signed with Capitol Records in late 2013 and went to work on their debut album. The band released its first single “She Looks So Perfect” in February and it’s become a worldwide hit.

Their first headlining tour in Australia sold out within minutes, and 5SOS has also made inroads in the UK. They are just starting to break in the United States.

Their single was released here in April and reached No. 2 on the pop charts. They’re currently backing One Direction again on the boy band’s summer tour of Europe.

Their “Today Show” appearance, marks their first big exposure in the United States. So far, their album, 5 Seconds Of Summer, has yet to be released here. It hit Europe and Australia last month.

Although it’s still not released officially, you can buy or download the album from amazon.com by clicking the link above.
