Saldana, 36, had been the target of pregnancy rumors for weeks.
While she and her husband have neither confirmed nor denied reports, a rep finally admitted her condition, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She definitely looked heavier than normal at the premiere.
She is reportedly three-months pregnant, according to another tabloid report.
Having a baby for the first time at 36, however, comes with risks.
Women have more trouble staying pregnant as they get older; miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies go up substantially with age, according to medical references.
Genetic issues also become a factor.
The risk of having a baby with Down syndrome is about 1 in 1,250, but by age 40, the risk is 1 in 100, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Saldana appears to be in good health and the fact that the news is public suggests she’s confident she’s over the first trimester danger of a miscarriage.
Still, she likely will receive genetic testing and counseling as she nears her due date.
Saldana has always been known for her slim figure. Her character in the movie, Gamora, isa butt-kicking assassin with a rockin’ body.
But she covered up in a Louis Vuitton dress that hugged her new curves.
Saldana has always talked about starting a family and having kids.
“I’m Latin, we start young, honey!” she said in an interview last year. “At 22 you’re like, ‘I just wanna hold something!’ You want a little critter.”
“I get along very well with animals and children,” she added.
“I dig them. I get them. They make perfect sense to me. A child makes perfect sense to me. A child speaks more sense than an adult half of the time.”
