When the vampire series, starring Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, hit the big screen, it attracted more than tweens.
A whole group of fans, known as “Twilight moms,” fell for the UK actor. They were typically in their 30s or older and in some cases shared an infatuation with the actor with their kids.
“Fifty Shades of Grey,” which is expected to receive an “NC-17” rating, will likely exclude much of the tween audience that was able to see the PG-13-rated “Twilight” movies.
But it won’t exclude “Twilight” moms.
The film is being sold as a “chick flick” that appeals to women, despite its heavy sexual content. The best-selling novels by the same name were written by a woman, E.L. James.
The screenplay was written by a woman, Kelly Marcel with Patrick Marber and Mark Bomback, and the film was directed by a woman, Sam Taylor-Johnson.
In the film, Dornan plays Christian Grey, a powerful young business mogul who has everything and wants more. He seduces young college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and she submits to his sexual fetishes, which are all centered on control.
He’s character is supposed to represent a romantic ideal in much the same way as Pattinson’s vampire Edward Cullen did in “Twilight.”
Although the themes of “Fifty Shades of Grey” are more adult and sexual, he is in a sense a modern-day vampire in the way he desires to possess and control Anastasia.
Doran, personally, also shares the same reserve and self-deprecating humor as Pattison’s and he is considered drop-dead gorgeous. He began his career as a male model.
One thing is certain, the movie, which will be released over Valentine’s Day weekend in 2015, is sure to get a lot of attention and will likely be with us for awhile.
There are three books in the series which is likely to translate into four movies, if “Twilight” proves to be any guide.
Dornan was featured for a second day on NBC’s “Today Show” with author James and co-star Dakota Johnson. They offered a behind-the-scenes look at the movie.
