Focus World has acquired U.S. distribution rights for the picture with plans to release the film in the United States in early 2015.
The alternative distribution unit owned and operated by Focus Features made the announcement Sept. 1 in Los Angeles.
“David Cronenberg is one of independent cinema’s greatest auteurs. He and [writer] Bruce Wagner have crafted an unforgettable film showcasing standout performances from a top-notch cast,” said Focus World Senior Vice President Anjay Nagpal in a statement.
For a while it looked like U.S. fans might not get to see the picture at all. Now they will, but not before it’s released in the UK later this month. Sept. 24.
It will hit Canada on Oct. 31 and then Australia on Nov. 20.
Focus World’s acquisition guarantees at least a limited release in U.S. theaters, but so far it has not announced any marketing strategy and may not make this year’s Oscar race.
While it was shopping for a distributor, co-financers Entertainment One (eOne) and Prospero Pictures made the rounds of several festivals. “Maps” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where Moore won top honors as best actress.
It hit the 2014 New Zealand International Film Festival in July. It’s scheduled for screenings at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 9, and the 2014 New York Film Festival, Sept. 27.
Cronenberg worked with Rob on 2013 film “Cosmopolis,” which looked at the world of high finance in New York City. This time, the noted director is tackling the idiosyncratic world of Hollywood.
The contemporary tale explores the demons of celebrity obsession in our society,” according to Focus.
Rob is paired with four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Williams, Evan Bird, Sarah Gadon and John Cusack.
It may be the actor’s most eccentric role yet. Rob plays a limo driver who is a frustrated actor. In at least one scene from a German trailer posted by TheImproper, he wears a blonde pompadour wig.
eOne Films International handles worldwide rights to “Maps” and will directly distribute the film in Canada, the U.K., Australia and New Zealand. WME negotiated on behalf of eOne with Mr. Nagpal and Gene Kang, VP of Business Affairs, representing Focus World.
