Kerry Washington is stepping up on behalf of abused women in the wake of NFL footballer Ray Rice’s domestic abuse scandal, a role she’s had for some time as part of the purple purse program.

A new public service announcement has just been released and she is speaking out as part of the campaign.

Washington, 37, is best known for her role as a seductress in the hit show “Scandal.”

But the real scandal, she says in a new PSA, are the thousands of women who are both physically abused and also financially abused each year.

Rice was caught on a security video knocking out his then-fiancee, now-wife Janay Palmer with a brutal punch to the face during an argument.

The incident occurred in Atlantic City in February, but gained national attention and finally stern action from the NFL after a video of the incident went viral.

But Washington got involved in the issue way before that. She carried a deep purple Prada clutch at the Primetime Emmys and the NAACP Image Awards earlier this year. She was also spotted with a similar purse in New York City this week.

On Monday (Sept. 15), She hosted the 2014 Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Program, which educates women about domestic violence and financial abuse. It was held at the The Glasshouses in Manhattan.

“One in four women will be a victim of domestic violence,” Kerry says in the PSA.

“Finances are almost always a weapon of choice. Taking away access to cash, destroying credit, jeopardizing jobs; financial abuse leaves invisible bruises that can take decades to heal.”
