Miley climbed into her big butt costume during the show and began twerking with it.
At one point she dropped down to all fours and held it high while a backup dancer flogged her with a Mexican national flag. That raised the ire of local pols.
The found it particularly offensive because the concert was held the same day as Mexico’s Independence Day. It just so happens Mexico has a law protecting national symbols, including their flag, from “desecration.”
Francisco Trevino Cabello, a member of the right-wing, ultra-nationalist National Action Party and a state legislator in Nuevo Leon, called for an investigation, according to gossip site TMZ.
The Neuvo Leon state legislature voted unanimously to seek an investigation by the federal government’s Interior Ministry, which has jurisdiction in the case.
In Mexico, a conviction for desecrating the flag includes a fines and up to 36 hours in jail.
Gossip sites are making a mountain out of the incident because, well, it involves Miley. But also because Mexican singer Paulina Rubio was fined in 2007 for wearing a flag in a nude magazine photo spread.
In this case, though, you can chalk up the brouhaha to right-wing political grandstanding.
The last thing the Mexican government wants is to create an international incident with the United States involving the pop singer.
In the U.S., such an act would be considered “political speech” and would protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Miley has two more concerts in Mexico this weekend, so it remains to be seen if the Mexican government takes action before she blows the country.
