Stewart and Williams were doing a bit on President Obama’s terrorism speech.
The conversation drifted into a hilarious back-and-forth on the rise of new terror groups like “Al Kill Yall” and “Al Fauq U Up” when Williams interjected:
“Just as you were talking, a new terrorist group formed, with one member each from ISIS, al-Nusra, Al Qaeda, Hamas, One Direction and the Zetas drug cartel.”
“What? A super group?” Stewart replied incredulously.
Ah huh…the Superists,” said Williams. “They like to hijack planes and take them to Cuba. They’re really playing it old school.”
The bit went on, but the mention of One Direction sparked an outpouring from fans on Twitter. But somehow wires got crossed.
Fans scolded Stewart and Williams because they thought they were referring to band member Zayn Malik, who is of Pakistani descent.
But Pakistan is far from the Middle East and does not sponsor terror groups, outside of, maybe, covertly supporting the Taliban. So point missed.
Even so, it was enough to turn #TheDailyShowGoneTooFar into a trending topic on Twitter. One Direction has 20.6 million followers on the social media site.
Maybe, One Direction fans need to pay a little more attention to geography.
In fact, the show may have been inspired by a photos that circulated yesterday (Sept. 25) on Instagram showing One Direction bander Liam Payne posing with a gun on a visit to the stars of reality show Duck Dynasty.
That sparked a Twitter outcry as well.
