Swift released the song at midnight on Monday (Oct. 13) and confirmed on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” that it is about another relationship gone sour.
“This was a relationship where I was kind of, living day to day, wondering where it was going, if it was going to go anywhere, if it was going to end the next day,” she said on the show.
But a relationship with who?
While Taylor has been mum on that point, there seems to be enough circumstantial evidence in the lyrics to suggest she’s singing about One Direction’s Harry Styles.
The key piece of evidence, of course, is the lyric where she sings:
Last December, we were built to fall apart,
Then fall back together.
Your necklace hanging from my neck,
The night we couldn’t quite forget.
In December 2012, she became involved in a whirlwind romance with the now 20-year-old singer. They were spotted strolling together in New York City’s Central Park early that month.
Taylor was on the rebound from her summer romance with Conor Kennedy, the son of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the late Mary Richardson Kennedy. They’d broken up in October.
She and Styles were next spotted skiing in Utah and later turned up in the Virgin Islands. The couple jetted to the Caribbean on New Year’s Day.
But the wheels came off almost as quickly.
Swift was spotted leaving her little Harry love spot, the island of Virgin Gorda, after three days, following a reported monumental row, while Harry remained behind in full party mode.
It was her second shortest relationship, next to “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner.
