Stone, 25, generated Oscar buzz at the festival and appears to top her other standout performances in “The Help” and “Spider-Man” movies.
Stone plays the daughter and personal assistant of a washed-up actor, played by Michael Keaton. He’s looking for a second act after a breakout role as Birdman, a comic book superhero.
But the actor, Riggan Thomson, is awash in self-pity and refusal to get with the times.
In the clip, Stone berates her father in a powerful scene.
“This is my chance to finally do something meaningful,” Riggan cries.
“Meaningful to who?” Stone’s character shoots back. “You had a career, dad, before the third comic book movie. Before people started to forget who was in that bird costume.”
“Face it dad, you are not doing this for the sake of art. You are doing this because you want to feel relevant again,” she adds. “Well, guess what? There is an entire world out there were people fight to be relevant everyday.”
“You’re scared to death, like the rest of us, that you don’t matter. And you know what? You’re right. You don’t. You’re not important. Get used to it.”
Stone is emotional and wrenching for her closeup. But her lisp… if you think about it, it kind of makes the scene comical.
The picture also stars Naomi Watts and Edward Norton. It hits theaters Oct. 17.
