Swift, 24, took over a building rooftop “in her neighborhood,” to perform the 27-minute show.
She opened with her bouncy pop tribute to the Big Apple, “Welcome to New York.” While she sang, lights on the Empire State Building, a city landmark, flashed in unison with the music.
“I have no ability to be calm right now, because my album, 1989, just came out,” she said. “And I have no chill and no ability to relax.”
Swift noted that she had hand-picked the audience members, which numbered about 200. They were selected through various social media outlets.
She said she would be playing her songs for the first time. Swift proceeded to describe her songs and followed with “Out of the Woods,” about a relationship that never really got off the ground.
She also sang “Style,” a song about fashions that don’t go out of style and “Blank Space,” about how the media fictionalizes and sensationalizes her personal life, creating a character who is “emotionally unstable and needy and clingy.”
