What’s it like for your average white guy to walk New York City’s mean streets for ten hours? Will he get the same treatment as catcall girl in another viral video? Funny or die finds out in a hilarious send-up that’s sure to rile feminists everywhere.
The clip in question was published on YouTube Oct. 28 by a group called Hollaback!.
It’s designed to call attention to the everyday sexual harassment endured by women who walk down a “typical” New York City street. While the video is commendable for trying to highlight a persistent problem, it went way overboard to prove a point.
The woman, Shoshanna Roberts, told ABC News she was catcalled more than 100 times during her 10-hour stroll around New York.
“It was all types people,” Roberts said. “All colors, shapes, sizes [and] ages.”
Except the video seemed to hone in on street people who didn’t have much to do in the middle of the afternoon and weren’t exactly dressed for success. The men were also overwhelmingly black and latino. What’s with that?
Hollaback! is a non-profit organization that raises awareness about street harassment. It’s now using the clip as part of a public service announcement titled “10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman.”
