Bieber has become a polarizing figure in the United States because of his loutish behavior, blatant drug use and frequent run-ins with the law.
While it’s too early to pronounce him a “has-been”– he’s not even 21 yet — it’s hard to see where his career will go from here. He’s fortunate that European fans are far more forgiving and more loyal than U.S. fans.
Right. He was just one of a couple of artists who oddly won awards.
Meanwhile new generation of artists are emerging and threatening to eclipse the once popular teen singer.
One Direction debuted in the United States in March 2012 on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “Today.” They exploded from there, selling more than 15 million albums, singles, and videos worldwide.
Other artists who have emerged since Bieber include Ed Sheeran and Pop-rock group 5 Seconds of Summer. For a time The Wanted, another boy band also made waves.
“Anaconda” rapper Nicki Minaj was also a big winner at the EMAs. She hosted the show at the SSE Hyrdro in Glasgow, Scotland and won an award for best hip-hop artist. Rap rival Iggy Azalea was snubbed.
Nicki also performed along with Grande, Sheeran, UK singer Charli XCX, a very pregnant Alicia Keys and Irish rockers U2.
Katy Perry was also a big winner with two awards for Best Video, “Dark Horse,” and Best Look.
Fifth Harmony was named the best U.S. act. The five-member girl band has yet to release its debut album, Reflection. They also performed their hit song “Sledgehammer.”
