Although the scenes are brief, it’s hard to imagine a major network airing the ad anytime other than late night, the source says.
The thrill of the movie, of course, is the erotic relationship between Dornan’s character Christian Grey and Johnson’s character Anastasia Steele, a young college student at least 20 years Grey’s junior.
With all the heat on comedian Bill Cosby right now in the wake of multiple allegations of rape, major networks are particularly skittish about airing sexual content, especial sado-masochistic sex.
Grey, a powerful New York City executive lays out the terms of the relationship right off the bat. “I don’t do romance,” he says. “My tastes are very singular.”
By that he means whips, blindfolds, and bondage. His comments are a voice over to scenes showing his selection of whips and a blindfold.
In the clip’s last scene, Dornan, again in voice-over mode says in a breathy tone, “Do you trust me?” as a pair of hands slip a blindfold over Anastasia’s eyes.
Of course, Grey is no Cosby, who allegedly drugged his victims into unconsciousness before assaulting them. Anastasia consents. But does she really?
Grey is rich and powerful, like Cosby, and is so far above Anastasia’s meager station in life, she finds it impossible to refuse. Grey seduces Anastasia with his money an power.
It should come as no surprise that many of Cosby’s alleged victims were lured by the promise of help with their careers or jobs on his show.
Look for this commercial to air on cable.
